Students’ Assembly on Reducing Harms from Toxic Drugs

British Columbia is in the midst of a toxic drug crisis, including at UVic.

UVic is hosting a Students’ Assembly on Reducing Harms from Toxic Drugs March 29-30. At this event, students will help shape the university’s approach to harm reduction and overdose prevention.

Participants will:

  • Learn about the toxic drug crisis in BC and different evidence-based approaches to harm reduction
  • Meet with experts and hear from those with lived experience of drug use
  • Provide input to enhance harm reduction strategies at UVic

Informing a university-wide approach

Students' Assembly members will discuss ways to enhance strategies to reduce harms of an unregulated drug supply at UVic. Topics for discussion will address harm prevention, reduction and response.

Outcomes of these discussions will be submitted with UVic’s Campus Overdose Prevention and Response Committee and will inform the university’s response to the toxic drug crisis.

About citizens’ assemblies

A citizens’ assembly is a small group brought together to discuss a specific issue. The aim is to gather insights, opinions, and recommendations that can inform decision-making on important issues.

Members are given information, expert opinions and other data to help inform their discussions. They then develop recommendations, which influence policy and practices and help to shape solutions to critical challenges.
