Seven UVic scholars hold their positions among the best in the world

7 uvic highly cited researchers

Each of Clarivate’s Highly Cited Researchers has authored multiple papers that rank in the top one per cent by citations for their field(s) and publication year. However, citation activity is not the sole selection indicator. Clarivate also applies qualitative analysis and expert judgment to refine the list using evidence of community-wide recognition from an international and wide-ranging network of citing authors.

The UVic scholars who made the 2024 list of Highly Cited Researchers are having an impact on the UN Sustainable Development Goals 3 Good health and well-being; 6 Clean water and sanitation; 7 Affordable and clean energy; 9 Industry, innovation and infrastructure; and 13 Climate action

Here is a sample of why these scholars have earned their place in this prestigious company:

Tom Gleeson (Engineering) and co-authors recently about a Nature groundwater article by other scientists. Gleeson’s assessment has been accessed 12,000 times to date. This is his second year on the list.

(Education) joins the Highly Cited list for the fifth year in a row, with more than 550 refereed papers, 35 book chapters, three textbooks and almost 37,000 citations.

(Science and Engineering). A recent article, co-authored by Canada Research Chair Saidaminov and an all-UVic team, has already been accessed more than 5,600 times. This is his fourth consecutive year on the list.

’s (Engineering) innovative and impactful research has advanced his field, improved industry practice and broadly impacted society. This is his tenth year on the list.

(Medical Sciences), neuroimmunologist and Canada Research Chair, published 21 manuscripts in 2020, 28 in 2021, 31 in each of 2022 and 2023, and 16 published or in press so far in 2024. This is her fourth year on the list.

Xuebin Zhang (Pacific Climate Impacts Consortium) has a long career studying climate and sharing knowledge with scientists, the public and policy makers. This is his fourth year on the list.

(Pacific Climate Impacts Consortium) applies statistical methods to the analysis of  observed and simulated climate variability and change. This is his seventh year on the list.
