On March 3rd, climate researchers from across the ³Ô¹ÏÍø came together for the first in a series of events focused on fostering connection, collaboration, and community. Led by UVic’s Special Advisor Climate, Julia Baum, the event was the first step in establishing a new climate hub, designed to strengthen connections between climate researchers across faculties and expedite tackling the urgent climate challenges facing the world.

Among the attendees was Ian Mauro, executive director of the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions (PICS) which has provided funding for establishing the hub and initial activities. Over lunch, he gave an overview of PICS work and the support they provide for universities and researchers in advancing climate action.

The event provided a valuable space for the 40 attendees to develop ideas that will help shape the new hub and how it addresses challenges and opportunities in climate research. Through a series of activities, the group distilled their ideas on how they can increase the collective impact of UVic’s climate research to help move the needle on the climate crisis.

"In discussing climate with UVic researchers, one of the most common suggestions I’ve heard is that they would like a way to connect with other climate researchers from across campus and feel part of a community. This is one of the core purposes UVic’s new climate hub will serve. Plus, it’s an amazing opportunity to showcase the great climate work being done across campus and catalyze new climate initiatives.”

The hub, which was a key recommendation of the Climate and Sustainability Action Plan 2030, will launch in April 2025 with a dedicated web presence featuring a climate researcher database.
