About Brian Starzomski
Broadly trained as a community ecologist and conservation biologist, Brian’s research examines biodiversity structure and dynamics, and seeks to link theory and empirical approaches. Basically he looks at where species are and tries to explain why they’re there.
Recent and current projects have been focused in British Columbia, looking at how human use of nature impacts biodiversity, whether over decades or millennia, or how marine-terrestrial interactions structure island food webs. A large component of his work uses community science approaches to inventory biodiversity across Canada, including in ), often with endangered and threatened species. Some new and old work is still focused on the insects and plants of Costa Rica. Brian doesn't have an organismal bias to his research, and he is comfortable working across the taxonomic spectrum, from insects to plants to birds.
